Biografia

Academic curriculum

Duilio D’Alfonso took his degree in Philosophy at Rome University “La Sapienza” with a thesis on natural language parsing in generative linguistics, under the supervision of professor Tullio De Mauro. Then he attended the doctoral school at University of Palermo, Philosophy Department, with professor Franco Lo Piparo, and he obtained his PhD in “Philosophy of Language and Mind” in April 2007. The PhD thesis was published by the University of Calabria publisher. In 2006 he began a scientific collaboration with professor Ruth Kempson and her research group at King’s College London. As scholar in philosophy of language, he was interested in theoretical and computational syntax and semantics. He was also concerned with the problem of the semantics/pragmatics interface. In the area of logic and epistemology, he worked on theories of inductive reasoning and machine learning, and on theory of complexity.

D’Alfonso is graduated in Piano and in Composition at the State Music Conservatory of L’Aquila. As a composer, a number of compositions have been performed in Italy and abroad, and were transmitted in various radio programs. As a music teacher, after having obtained the national habilitation for teaching composition (1999), he taught Harmony and Counterpoint, Theory of Harmony and Music Analysis in several Italian Public Conservatories. As a music theorist, he is concerned with topics in music cognition, Schenkerian analysis, neo-Riemannian theory, and issues on the epistemology of music analysis. He is involved, as scholar and teacher, in theory of musical form (Formenlehre). His book on the sonata in the classic era is to be published by the LIM, the most relevant Italian publisher in musicology.
